Mary Ann grew up in Victoria and attended university in Victoria, Vancouver and Ottawa. Called to the bar in 1993, she began her litigation career at a large firm in Vancouver, BC. After moving back to Victoria in 1995, she continued practicing law with a large firm before co-founding MacKenzie Smith Lawyers – a firm established with former opposing counsel, Malcolm J. C. Smith. After eight successful years in partnership, Mary Ann established MacKenzie Law, bringing her experience, common sense and integrity to the new practice.

Susan Thuynsma

Paralegal

Susan has worked with Mary Ann as a paralegal for almost 27 years. Armed with a Legal Assistant Diploma from Grant MacEwan Community College, Susan began her career in 1989 as a legal assistant in Edmonton, transitioning to a paralegal before moving to Victoria in 1997.

On the West Coast, Susan met and worked with Mary Ann at what is now Carfra Lawton LLP. When Mary Ann co-founded MacKenzie Smith Lawyers, Susan joined the practice. Today, she continues to be an essential and invaluable member of the dynamic team at MacKenzie Law.
